A Life Dedicated to Justice, Truth & Community

Melba Pearson is a nationally recognized criminal law/civil rights attorney, justice reform strategist, media commentator, academic leader, and survivor of gender-based violence. She brings clarity, humanity, and courage to every space she enters — from the courtroom to the classroom to national television.

With over two decades of experience spanning prosecution, civil rights, community advocacy, policy leadership, and media, Melba’s work sits at the intersection of law, trauma, and social change.

From Prosecutor to National Voice for Justice

Melba V. Pearson, Esq., is a criminal law and civil rights attorney whose career spans prosecution, policy reform, academia, and public education.

She spent close to two decades as a prosecutor in Miami-Dade County, handling homicides and supporting survivors of harm. She later served as the Deputy Director of the ACLU of Florida, where she worked at the forefront of policing reform, civil rights advocacy, and statewide policy change.

Today, Melba is a nationally recognized justice strategist whose work focuses on:

  • ethical and trauma-informed prosecution
  • gender-based violence response
  • community trust and transparency
  • justice communication and storytelling
  • data-informed leadership
  • equity-centered policy

Melba also serves as Chair of the American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section, guiding national conversations on justice policy, democracy, and ethical decision-making.

In her academic role, she teaches in the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Florida International University, where she co-develops courses and programs that bridge theory with real-world justice practice.

Melba is also a respected media commentator. She breaks down justice issues on Court TV, contributes weekly to Legal AF, and has appeared in documentary series, including:

  • NBC Dateline
  • American Gangsters: Trap Queens
  • Women Behind Bars

Her gift is explaining the law with clarity and compassion — helping the public understand complex issues without sensationalism.

Above all, Melba’s commitment to justice is personal. As a survivor of gender-based violence, she advocates fiercely for trauma-informed systems, survivors’ rights, and a justice process that restores dignity instead of deepening harm.
